Adapting Gold Seal Certification for the Canadian Construction Industry

Gold Seal – ‘Expect Excellence’

The Gold Seal Certification program has long been recognized as the premiere standard for excellence in the management of construction projects. Developed by the industry for the industry, Gold Seal Certification provides a demonstrable standard  for individuals  in the Canadian construction industry to distinguish themselves, and showcase excellence. Hence ‘Expect Excellence.’

Today, with 25 years and  10,000 construction professionals now certified, the Gold Seal Certification program is undertaking a strategic shift in order to better respond to industry needs, and ensure the program remains the premiere standard for excellence.

Small Changes, Big Results

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) Executive  and Board of Directors recognized the importance of the Gold Seal Program to the industry and   wholeheartedly committed  to  Gold Seal Certification as a core program of the association. This includes establishing the national Gold Seal Committee as a fully resourced Standing Committee of CCA, structured to ensure a broad cross-sectional representation of the industry, with strategic succession to ensure long-term governance.

As a  core program of the CCA,  emphasis will be placed on continuous improvement and program excellence. The program will also undergo a full cost/benefit analysis on its activities, to provide a comprehensive review and recommendations for  investment of reallocated or additional resources. Once again, the priority remains to continually improve the program for new and future certificate holders, and the industry as a whole.

Value-added Strategic Goals

With this shift also comes a new strategic focus for the Gold Seal Certification program.

While the program’s core principles will remain in place, increased emphasis will be placed on the individual, and the significance of Gold Seal Certification for construction management professionals.

In addition, there will be focused attention and review of:

  • Improving the exam delivery methods, including online consideration, and clearly identified turnaround times for results.
  • Introduction of new value-added pursuits such as a student designation, while continuing to review the existing requirements in order to gain certification.
  • Examining mandatory education requirements for certification to ensure that  ‘Expect Excellence’ is truly an outcome from Gold Seal Certified professionals
  • Introducing a mandatory Industry Ethics course in 2016

What Does This Mean for the Individual and for the Industry

The Gold Seal Certification Program will place a sustained and strategic focus on improving the overall program for all construction industry stakeholders.

As part of the program delivery, rebates to Local Construction Associations will be phased out, with new mandatory education compensating for those previous revenues. The program should be an important part of the Local Association’s offering without compensation.  Mandatory courses, identified by the National Gold Seal Committee and geared to specific Gold Seal designations (safety coordinator, project manager etc.), will include topics that are important and relevant across the Canadian construction industry, and  will continue to showcase excellence for certificate holders.

In addition, the Gold Seal Champion program will be dropped.

Next Steps

The above changes will focus and enhance  the professionalism and excellence that Gold Seal Certification embodies – ‘Expect Excellence.’

Gold Seal will also be improving its presence in social media, and its overall marketing efforts to appeal to key demographics and target audiences. Recognizing the importance of the next generation of construction professionals, Gold Seal remains committed to sharing news and information regarding the industry’s premiere certification program.

An expected outcome of the above direction is increased awareness and demand for Gold Seal Certification. The committee has challenged itself to set  targets to define success and not rely on the status quo.

The Gold Seal Committee is confident that these proposed direction will bring a renewed interest and vigour to the program, enabling the Gold Seal Certification Program to continue to  – ‘Expect Excellence.’
